It would seem, what can surprise such simple and already ordinary devices like external storage? But Seagate company presented four models at the exhibition, each of which has original and unusual functions!
The main announcements made this year in Las Vegas as part of the consumer electronics exhibition did not really correspond to the name of the event – it was about much more global things than those that each of us can find on the shelves of stores. But although a large part of the exposition CES 2018 was devoted to such promising technologies as artificial intelligence, Internet of things and auto-piloted cars, most of the novelties were still intended for end users.
This fully applies to the products introduced by Seagate: its innovations are a new look at fairly simple devices. By the way, Seagate shares on the first day of the exhibition soared by more than 7%. Perhaps the reason for this interest of investors was a message about the beginning of cooperation with the largest Chinese online retailer JingDong, well known to our readers through the online store JD.com. As part of this collaboration, a hybrid product was launched, targeting mobile device users, Joy Drive.
This device combines the functions of a portable drive and a backup battery. Joy Drive is aimed at working with smartphones and tablets running the Android operating system, it is equipped with a Micro-USB interface, but the adapter also includes a Micro-USB to USB Type-C adapter. The capacity of the built-in hard disk is 1 TB, the declared value in China is 660 yuan, which corresponds to 99 US dollars, the warranty is 2 years.
It is worth noting that, unfortunately, Joy Drive does not allow you to simultaneously charge the device and work with data. On the body of the device is a lever, which allows you to select the mode of the drive or battery. The capacity of the battery is not reported. It is also unknown whether the device, decorated with a logotype familiar to all JD.com users with a dog, will be shipped to countries other than China, but company representatives said that such a possibility is being considered. And in the Middle Kingdom the novelty will go on sale in March.
A number of products created in cooperation with other brands, continues LaCie DJI Copilot – the second modification of the external drive for videographers who use drones in their work. As you can easily guess by name, this device is the fruit of a strategic partnership with DJI, the world’s leading manufacturer of quadrocopters. With the help of LaCie DJI Copilot, which is a universal device for backup on the set, videographers will be able to simplify shooting in the field.
The drive, enclosed in a rubberized housing with moisture and dust protection level IP54, is equipped with a built-in screen, allowing you to monitor the level of charge and operating mode of the device. There is also a slot for memory cards – LaCie DJI Copilot allows you to save data from the SD card with the push of a button. And for more complex operations with files, including viewing the captured video in full resolution, use the mobile application BOSS (Back-up On Set Solution), which can be installed on a smartphone or tablet.
The capacity of LaCie DJI Copilot is 2 TB. The manufacturer’s recommended retail price for Russia is 26,300 rubles; deliveries will begin in the spring. The guarantee is 3 years.
Another interesting novelty introduced by Seagate on CES 2018 is the Seagate Fast SSD portable drive, which uses a USB Type-C interface to connect to the computer. This device can be called a pocket device – thanks to the use of solid-state memory instead of a hard disk, the developers managed to make it very compact. The declared speed of sequential reading of information reaches 540 MB / s, the speed of sequential recording is 520 MB / s.
Novelty is compatible with computers running Windows and macOS. The Fast SSD series includes three models – with a capacity of 250 and 500 GB, as well as 1 TB.
Those users who are seriously concerned about data protection, is intended for the new Seagate LaCie Rugged drive – LaCie Rugged Secure. Externally, it resembles the above described model LaCie DJI Copilot, and it is no coincidence that the style of both devices was developed by designer Neil Poulton. LaCie Rugged Secure is designed for use in the most extreme conditions: the drive will survive and work at sub-zero temperatures, which is relevant for our latitudes, and repeated falls on a hard surface. In addition, Rugged Secure supports hardware encryption of data using Seagate Secure technology: immediately after disabling Rugged Secure from the computer, it automatically blocks, and access to the data stored on the device will be possible only with the proprietary Toolkit software and after entering the password. As with the Seagate Fast SSD, the drive will be available in the spring.
Of course, visiting the Seagate booth, at the exhibition we did not miss the opportunity to talk with representatives of the company and discuss with them its idea of the future of the market for storage devices and the company’s lineup. Our questions were answered by Ted Oud, Marketing Director of the Seagate Client Solutions Department.
Journalist: Seagate remained virtually the only manufacturer of hybrid drives (HDD / SSD). What perspectives, in your opinion, still exist in this direction and does Seagate plan to develop it in the future?
T. Oud: Seagate is still watching the demand for hybrid drives of its brand FireCuda in certain client and consumer markets. The FireCuda family, based on hybrid technology, is popular with many end users, as well as with system integrators in the computer games industry. Seagate will continue to meet the demand for this technology in the gaming segment for the PC, as well as in other vertical markets.
Journalist: Will there be new HDDs with SMR technology from Seagate, or is this developmental path deadlocked? In this area, Seagate stopped at 8 TB and did not update the Archive HDD line for a long time.
T. Oud: Seagate is the leader in SMR technology. We shipped ~ 80 million SMR disks in the consumer market – in the DAS, PC, gaming computers, gaming consoles, as well as for the corporate segment and video surveillance sector. Now we are developing the sixth-generation SMR technology for high-capacity disks.
Journalist: In recent years, HDD manufacturers have introduced several new categories of hard disks, oriented to a specific scenario of use, – disks for NAS and video surveillance systems. Recently, Seagate introduced the SkyHawk AI line for processing video data by machine learning networks. Do you think that there are any other market niches that can be covered by specialized hard disk drives?
T. Oud: As markets grow, so does the use of disks. This inevitably leads to a change in the specifics of the need for data storage. Being a technological leader, our company invests in creating specialized solutions for our customers. In the future, Seagate will continue to explore the markets, identify new opportunities for creating highly optimized solutions, so that our partners and customers will get the most out of them.
