Not many people know how to ski or snowboard. But often not newcomers, resting on snow-covered slopes, return with injuries and fractures of bones. The American startup Roam Robotics offers to minimize the traumatism from winter sports. Employees of the company created a special exoskeleton, which will help beginners skiers and professional athletes of any age protect their feet.
The design solution of the novelty consists of several modules: a backpack with a source of energy located inside and two mechanical structures equipped with pneumatic control systems (actuators) fixed on the legs of a skier in the form of “boots”. Bending the extremities of the athlete leads to the filling of the actuator with air, which, in turn, relieves the load on the legs of the skier. The use of an exoskeleton will increase the time spent on skiing without fatigue. Under certain conditions, such devices can be used by snowboarders.
The approximate cost of an exoskeleton for skiers will be 2-2.5 thousand dollars. The time of the novelty appearance on the market is not reported. The developers assume that the devices can be used by the owners of ski resorts for renting.
